THE REALTIME WRITER’S MANUAL
A Commonsense Guide for Court Reporters
    by Ed Varallo, RMR, CRR

With The Realtime Writer's Manual, you’ll learn how to build a powerful personal dictionary so that you can accurately translate in real time thousands of words that aren’t in your dictionary! How? By understanding and applying the concept of prefixes and suffixes combined with root words and root stems. The word uncharacteristic is not in my dictionary, but its components are. It translates correctly because the root word is in my dictionary, plus the prefix and the suffix: un+character+istic = uncharacteristic. A root stem is the same thing as a root word, except it is not a standalone word by itself. The word insulate is not in my dictionary, but the root stem insul is, so a word like uninsulated translates perfectly: un+insul+ated.

There are nearly 50 prefixes and over 70 suffixes illustrated, along with root words and root stems. With these entries in your dictionary, you can now translate thousands of words that aren’t in it! It’s amazing!

Hundreds of sensible shortcuts are illustrated, to help streamline your writing in the most commonsense, easy-to-learn way. Every technique in this book I use myself.

This is the guidebook that will kick your realtime writing program into high gear!

Q&A Extensions

Both the question bank (STKPWHR) and the answer bank (-FRPBLGTS) can be employed creatively to exploit their phrasing potential. Try these. No doubt others will quickly come to mind.

Q. Now, STKPWHROU   Q. Well, STKPWHR-L
Q. Doctor, STKPWHR-D   Q. Sir, STKPWHR-S
Q. Sir, STKPWHR-S   Q. Now, Doctor, STKPWHROUD
Q. Now, sir, STKPWHROUS   Q. Well, Doctor, STKPWHR-LD
Q. Ma’am, STKPWHR-M   Q. Now, ma’am, STKPWHROUM
Q. All right. STKPWHR-RT   Q. All right, sir. STKPWHR-RTS

A. Well, W-FRPBLGTS   A. All right. HR-FRPBLGTS
A. Okay. K-FRPBLGTS   A. Fine. TP-FRPBLGTS
A. Oh, AO-FRPBLGTS   A. Right. R-FRPBLGTS
A. Sure. SH-FRPBLGTS   A. Correct. KR-FRPBLGTS
A. (Pause) P-FRPBLGTS   A. Yes. Y-FRPBLGTS
A. Yes, sir. Y*-FRPBLGTS   A. Right, sir. R*-FRPBLGTS
  . . . and many more

Realtime Flags

Develop a series of outlines that will not translate into English (that is, outlines which are not defined as entries in your personal dictionary) so that they can act as your CAT hot spots, flagging the places that need special attention from you during edit. Adopt a consistent approach, utilizing as much as possible a core outline to flag the various messages you want to leave for yourself. When, for example, during edit you see SP-FPLT, you will know you need to quickly read over the last few words or lines to find the place where a period must be inserted.

The following are selected from my own much larger stock of RT flags. They are meant only to illustrate the idea; they don’t begin to exhaust the possibilities. You can adapt the idea and organize your own systematic approach to highlighting trouble spots for yourself, without frantically trying to stroke a multiword note to yourself.
SP-F identifies a trouble spot that needs fixing
SP identifies a punctuation problem
SP-FM check transcript format. Should setup be Q&A? Colloquy? Readback?
SP-J identifies an outline that needs to be job-defined
SP-D check outline. Does it need to be defined in my personal dictionary?
SP-FPLT insert a period
  . . . and many more

If SP works for you as an outline on which to base a series of helpful notes to yourself, then use SKP to mean delete. For that purpose, write SKP-FPLT to mean "delete a period back there."

SKP-F identifies a trouble spot that needs fixing by deleting a word or words (false start)
SKP-FPLT delete a period "back there"
SKP-RBGS delete a comma
SKP/SKP delete quotation marks
SKPOE delete hyphen
SKPOE/SKPOE delete dashes
  . . . and many more
